# Editions and licences

Where each text comes from, under what licence, and how to credit it when you reuse it.

Canonical: https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/docs/licences

Every text comes from an edition, and every text answer carries that edition's `credit`:

| Field | Type | Description |
|---|---|---|
| `text` | string | Credit line for the edition: author, work, editor, source, licence and changes. Quote it when you reuse the text. |
| `license` | string | CC BY-SA 4.0, CC BY 3.0, Used with permission (The Latin Library), or a public-domain note. |
| `licenseUrl` | string or null |  |
| `source` | string | Where the edition comes from. |
| `quality` | string | ocr: an unproofread scan. One of `proofread`, `ocr`. |

## Licences

| Source | Licence | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Perseus Digital Library, First1KGreek and the Greek Library, for most texts | CC BY-SA 4.0 | Reuse and adapt with credit, under the same licence. |
| Wikisource, Project Gutenberg and others, for a few texts | Public domain | No conditions. Credit is still good practice. |
| The Latin Library | Used with permission | Not openly licensed. Quote with credit and a link, and ask The Latin Library before republishing. |
| Interlinea's analyses, translations and notes | CC BY-SA 4.0 | They adapt CC BY-SA text, so they are share-alike too. |

## How to credit

When you quote or reuse a text, give its citation and link, the edition's credit line and Interlinea, and keep CC BY-SA material under CC BY-SA 4.0. For example:

```text
Virgil, Aeneid 1.46-86. Text: the Perseus Digital Library, canonical-latinLit, CC BY-SA 4.0. Via Interlinea: https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/library/latin/virgil/aeneid/1.46
```

For a text from The Latin Library, use its credit as given:

```text
The Latin Library (thelatinlibrary.com), used with permission.
```

`credit.quality` is `ocr` for an unproofread scan, so check those texts before you quote them. [Every text and its licence](https://interlinea.aeterna-institute.org/about/texts) is listed on its own page.
