ἐν τοῖς Ἕλλησι τοῖς πάλαι μακρᾷ τῇ δόξῃ διέπρεπε Γοργίας ὁ Λεοντῖνος Φιλολάου καὶ Πρωταγόρας Δημοκρίτου, τῇ δὲ σοφίᾳ τοσοῦτον ἐλείποντο, ὅσον ἀνδρῶν παῖδες. ἔοικε γάρ πως ἡ δόξα μὴ πάνυ τι ἀκριβὲς μήτε ὁρᾶν μήτε ἀκούειν· ἔνθεν τοι καὶ πολλὰ σφάλλεται, καὶ τὰ μὲν καταχαρίζεται, τὰ δὲ ψεύδεται.
