ἔτι οὗ ἡ γένεσις διὰ θερμοῦ, τοῦτο θερμὸν τῇ αὐτοῦ φύσει. τῷ δὲ ἀέρι γένεσις ἐξ ὕδατος διὰ θερμοῦ γίνεται. θερμαινόμενον γὰρ τὸ ὕδωρ εἰς ἀέρα μεταβάλλει. ἀλλὰ καὶ ὅσον ἐκ γῆς εἰς ἀέρα μεταβάλλει, θερμαινομένης τρέπεται καὶ μεταβάλλει. ὥστε θερμὸς ὁ ἀὴρ τῇ αὐτοῦ φύσει. ἔτι εἰ κατὰ τὸ σύμβολον ἡ μεταβολὴ τοῖς στοιχείοις εὐκολωτέρα γίνεται εἰς ἄλληλα καὶ ἔστι τοῖς τρισὶν κοινόν τι σύμβολον ἄλλῳ πρὸς ἄλλο, εἴη ἂν καὶ τῷ ἀέρι καὶ τῷ πυρὶ κοινὸν σύμβολον. οὐδὲν δὲ ἄλλο δύναται, ἢ θερμόν. θερμὸς ἄρα ὁ ἀήρ. ἔστι δὲ σύμβολον τὸ κοινὸν γῇ μὲν καὶ ὕδατι τὸ ψυχρόν, πυρὶ δὲ καὶ γῇ τὸ ξηρόν, ὕδατι δὲ καὶ ἀέρι τὸ ὑγρόν, πυρὶ δὲ καὶ ἀέρι τὸ θερμόν.
