ἐγγυτάτω μὲν οὖν ἐστιν τοῦ πυρός τε καὶ τοῦ φωτίζειν πεφυκότος σῶμα τῶν ἐν γενέσει τὸ ὑπὸ σελήνην, ὃ καὶ ὑπέκκαυμα καλοῦμεν, μετὰ δὲ τοῦτο ἀήρ, καὶ τρίτον τὸ ὕδωρ, πορρωτάτω δὲ ἡ γῆ. διὸ κἀκεῖνα μὲν τοῦ μάλιστα ὁρατοῦ, λέγω δὲ τοῦ φωτός ἐστι δεκτικὰ μάλιστα, ὄντα διαφανῆ, ἡ δὲ γῆ οὐχ ὁμοίως. ἐναντία γὰρ αὕτη τῷ τε φωτίζειν καὶ τῷ μάλιστα φωτίζεσθαι δυναμένῳ, ὅπερ φαμὲν ὕλην·
