Οὐδ᾿ ὅταν τοῦ μὲν Ξ τοῦ δὲ Ν τινός. Πάλιν γὰρ καὶ ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ συζυγίᾳ ἡ μείζων πρότασις ἐπὶ μέρους γίνεται. ὅροι τοῦ μὲν ὑπάρχειν παντὶ τῷ Ξ τὸ Ν ζῷον, οὐσία, μονάς· μέσον ζῷον· τὸ γὰρ ζῷον τινὶ μὲν οὐσίᾳ, μονάδι δὲ οὐδεμιᾷ καὶ ἡ οὐσία πάσῃ μονάδι. δόξῃ δὲ προσχρῆται τῶν Πυθαγορικῶν, οἷς ἐδόκει ἡ μονὰς οὐσία εἶναι, ὥσπερ καὶ πρὸ ὀλίγου τῷ ἀριθμῷ. ἡ δὲ αὐτὴ δεῖξις, κἄν ἀντὶ τῆς μονάδος ληφθῇ λίθος. τοῦ δὲ μὴ ὑπάρχειν ζῷον, οὐσία, ἐπιστήμη· τὸ γὰρ ζῷον οὐσίᾳ μὲν τινί, ἐπιστήμῃ δὲ οὐδεμιᾷ, καὶ οὐσία οὐδεμιᾷ ἐπιστήμῃ. ἡ αὐτὴ αἰτία καὶ ἐν ταύτῃ τῇ συζυγίᾳ τοῦ αὐτὴν ἀσυλλόγιστον εἷναι.
