Διὸ κακῶς λέγουσι τῶν ἰατρῶν οἳ νόσον τινά φασιν ἐξ ὕλης γε γίγνεσθαι, καθάπερ τὸν ἐπὶ χυμοῖς σηπομένοις πυρετὸν ἐκ χυμοῦ· οἷον τριταῖον μὲν ἐκ ξανθῆς, τεταρταῖον δ᾽ ἐκ μελαίνης χολῆς, ὥσπερ ἐξ ὕλης, κυρίως γίγνεσθαι· οὐ γὰρ ὑλικὸν ὁ χυμὸς τῶν τοιούτων, ἀλλὰ ποιητικὸν μᾶλλον αἴτιον, ἐξ αὐτοῦ τε γίγνεται τὰ τοιαῦτα, οὐχ ὡς ἐνυπάρχοντος, ἀλλ᾽ ὡς ἀρχὴν κινήσεως ἔχοντος.
