PLUTARCH. De mus. 3 p. 1131 F—1132 A: Ἡρακλείδης δ' ἐν τῆι Συναγωγῆι τῶν ἐν μουσικῆι (IV) τὴν κιθαρωιδίαν καὶ τὴν κιθαρωιδικὴν ποίησιν πρῶτόν φησιν Ἀμφίονα ἐπινοῆσαι τὸν Διὸς καὶ Ἀντιόπης, τοῦ πατρὸς δηλονότι διδάξαντος αὐτόν. πιστοῦται δὲ τοῦτο ἐκ τῆς ἀναγραφῆς τῆς ἐν Σικυῶνι ἀποκειμένης, δι' ἧς τάς τε ἱερείας τὰς ἐν Ἄργει καὶ τοὺς ποιητὰς καὶ τοὺς μουσικοὺς ὀνομάζει.
