Τὸ Ἰόνιον πέλαγος τὸ περὶ Σικελίαν τὸ ὄνομα ἔλαβεν, ὡς μὲν ἔνιοι, ἀπὸ Ἰοῦς· Θεόπομπος δὲ ἀπὸ Ἰονίου ἀνδρὸς Ἰλλυριοῦ, Ἀρχέμαχος δὲ ἀπὸ τῶν ἀπολλυμένων ἐν αὐτῷ Ἰαόνων (Ἰώνων, οἵ εἰσιν Ἀθηναῖοι sch. Dion.).
