(400) Tῆς τῶν ποταμῶν πήξεως τῆς οὔσης σφαλερᾶς οἱ Θρᾷκες γνώμονα τὴν ἀλώπεκα ποιοῦνται. καὶ ἂν διαδράμῃ τὸν κρύσταλλον μὴ ἐνδιδόντα μηδὲ εἴκοντα τοῖς ἐκείνης βήμασι, θαρροῦσι καὶ ἕπονται. πεῖραν δὲ αὕτη ποιεῖται τοῦ μὴ σφαλεροῦ πόρου τὸν τρόπον τοῦτον. παραβάλλει τὸ οὖς ἐπὶ τῷ κρυστάλλῳ, κἂν μὲν αἴσθηται μὴ ὑπηχοῦν κάτωθεν τὸ ῥεῦμα μηδὲ ὑποψοφοῦν ἡσυχῇ εἰς βάθος, ἡ δὲ ἅς ἑστῶτι τῷ κρυστάλλῳ θαρσεῖ διαθεῖ τε πρώτη· εἰ δὲ μὴ οὐκ ἂν ἐπιβαίη.
