Ἡ δ’ ἀλώπηξ ὀχεύει μὲν ἀναβαίνουσα, τίκτει δ’ ὥσπερ ἡ ἄρκτος, καὶ ἔτι μᾶλλον ἀδιάρθρωτον. Ὅταν δὲ μέλλῃ τίκτειν, ἐκτοπίζει οὕτως ὥστε σπάνιον εἶναι τὸ ληφθῆναι κύουσαν. Ὅταν δ’ ἐκτέκῃ, τῇ γλώττῃ λείχουσα ἐκθερμαίνει καὶ συμπέττει. Τίκτει δὲ τέτταρα τὰ πλεῖστα.
