Λάροι καὶ αἴθυιαι καὶ ὅσα ἐστὶν ἄλλα ὄρνεα θαλάσσια τοὺς πλέοντας εἰς ἔσχατον κατάγουσι κίνδυνον, ἀλλʼ οὐκ ἀπολλύουσι καταδύεται μὲν γὰρ ταῦτα πάντα, ἀλλʼ οὐκ ἀποπνίγεται τῇ θαλάσσῃ. τοῖς δὲ ἄλλοις ἀνθρώποις ἤτοι ἑταίρας σημαίνει καὶ μαχίμους γυναῖκας ἢ ἄνδρας γόητας ἁρπακτικούς τε καὶ ἀγνώμονας καὶ ἐξ ὕδατος ἢ διʼ ὕδατος ἔχοντας τὴν ἐργασίαν . τὰ δὲ ἀπολλύμενα οὐ φασιν εὑρεθήσεσθαι ὅ τι γὰρ ἂν λάβωσι, τοῦτο καταπίνουσιν.
