Μοιχεῖαι μὲν γὰρ ἦσαν καὶ κλοπαὶ πανταχοῦ, φόνων δὲ καὶ ἁρπαγῶν πλήρης ἦν ἡ σύμπασα γῆ. καὶ νόμου μὲν οὐκ ἦν φροντὶς περὶ φθορᾶς καὶ ἀδικίας· πάντα δὲ τὰ κακὰ καθ’ ἕνα καὶ κοινῇ παρὰ πᾶσιν ἐπράττετο. Πόλεις μὲν κατὰ πόλεων ἐπολέμουν, καὶ ἔθνη κατὰ ἐθνῶν ἠγείρετο· διῄρητο δὲ πᾶσα ἡ οἰκουμένη στάσεσι καὶ μάχαις, ἑκάστου φιλονεικοῦντος ἐν τῷ παρανομεῖν.
