Τὸ μὲν οὖν συμπόσιον σκυθρωπῶς διελύθη ʽφαντασία γὰρ ἀποπληξίας αὐτοὺς ἔσχἐ, Διονύσιος δὲ καθ’ ἑαυτὸν γενόμενος πολλάκις ἀνεγίνωσκε τὰς ἐπιστολάς. Κατελάμβανε δὲ αὐτὸν πάθη ποικίλα, θυμός, ἀθυμία, φόβος, ἀπιστία. Ζῆν μὲν οὖν Χαιρέαν οὐκ ἐπίστευε ʽτοῦτο γὰρ οὐδὲ ὅλως ἤθελἐ, σκῆψιν δὲ μοιχικὴν ὑπελάμβανε Μιθριδάτου διαφθεῖραι θέλοντος Καλλιρρόην ἐλπίδι Χαιρέου.
