Καλλιρρόη μὲν ἐν τούτοις ἦν, Διονύσιος δὲ ἐπειρᾶτο μὲν φέρειν τὰ συμβαίνοντα γενναίως, διά τε φύσεως εὐστάθειαν καὶ διὰ παιδείας ἐπιμέλειαν, τὸ δὲ παράδοξον τῆς συμφορᾶς καὶ τὸν ἀνδρεῖον ἐκστῆσαι δυνατώτατον ὑπῆρχεν· ἐξεκάετο γὰρ σφοδρότερον ἢ ἐν Μιλήτῳ. Ἀρχόμενος γὰρ τῆς ἐπιθυμίας μόνου τοῦ κάλλους ἐραστὴς ἦν, τότε δὲ πολλὰ προσεξῆπτε τὸν ἔρωτα, συνήθεια καὶ τέκνων εὐεργεσία καὶ ἀχαριστία καὶ ζηλοτυπία καὶ μάλιστα τὸ ἀπροσδόκητον.
