Diog. Laërt. VII 121. μόνον τε ἐλεύθερον (scil. εἶναι τὸν σοφόν), τοὺς δὲ φαύλους δούλους· εἶναι γὰρ τὴν ἐλευθερίαν ἐξουσίαν αὐτοπραγίας, τὴν δὲ δουλείαν στέρησιν αὐτοπραγίας· εἶναι δὲ καὶ ἄλλην δουλείαν τὴν ἐν ὑποτάξει, καὶ τρίτην τὴν ἐν κτήσει τε καὶ ὑποτάξει, ἧ ἀντιτίθεται ἡ δεσποτεία, φαύλη οὖσα καὶ αὐτή.
