Σαφηνισθέντωον δὴ τῶν πολλαπλασιασμῶν, δεικτέον ἑξῆς πῶς τε δεῖ πολλαπλασιάζειν καὶ ἔτι πῶς μερίζειν, πρῶτον ὁρισαμένους τί ἐστι μερισμός· μερισμὸς γάρ ἐστιν ἀριθμοῦ τινος κατὰ ἕτερον ἀριθμὸν διαίρεσις εἰς ἴσα τε καὶ ἰσοπληθῆ ταῖς τοῦ ἀριθμοῦ μονάσι διαιρουμένου, εἴτε μονάδας ἐπὶ μονάδας μερίζειν δέοι, εἴτε λεπτὰ ἐπὶ λεπτά, εἴτε λεπτὰ καὶ μονάδας ἐπὶ λεπτὰ καὶ μονάδας.
