Αὐασίς, πόλις Αἰγύπτου. Ταύτην δὲ καὶ Ὄασιν καλοῦσιν .... Ἡρόδοτος δὲ καὶ Δοῦρις Μακάρων αὐτὴν ὠνόμασαν νῆσον. Πολυκράτης μητέρα νέμει. Μέμνηται ταύτης Δοῦρις. Λέγει δὲ ὅτι Πολυκράτης ὁ Σάμιος τῶν ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ ἀποθανόντων τὰς μητέρας συναγαγὼν δέδωκε τοῖς πλουσίοις τῶν πολιτῶν τρέφειν, πρὸς ἕκαστον λέγων ὅτι· Μητέρα σοι ταύτην δίδωμι. Ὅθεν ἡ παροιμία ἐκράτησεν. Γόργυια, τόπος ἐν Σάμῳ, ὡς ἱστορεῖ Δοῦρις, ἐν ᾧ Διονύσιος Γοργυιεὺς (Γοργορεὺς cod. Vratisl.) τιμᾶται.
