Ὅτι κατὰ μεταφορὰν τολμηροτέραν καὶ ποιητῇ πρέπουσαν σφυρὸν, ἤγουν πόδα, ἀνέμου λέγει τὴν βάσιν, ὃ ἔστι τὸν τόπον καὶ τὴν θέσιν ὅθεν πνέει. Τὸ δὲ κυρίως σφυρὸν διερμηνεύων Ἀριστοτέλης φησί· «τῆς κνήμης διοστέου οὔσης τὸ μὲν πρόσθιον ἀντικνήμιον λέγεται, τὸ δὲ ὀπίσθιον γαστροκνημία, τὸ δὲ ἔσχατον ἀντικνημίου σφυρόν.» Λέγει δὲ καὶ ὅτι τῶν σφυρῶν ἑκάτερον ἐκ πλαγίων τῶν δεξιῶν καὶ ἀριστερῶν κάμπτεται.
