Μεταβαίνειν δ’ ἀσφαλῶς βουλόμενον ἀπὸ τῶν ἔξωθεν ἐπὶ τὰ τῶν ζώων σώματα σκοπεῖσθαι πρῶτον μὲν εἰ λεπτομερές ἐστιν, ἢ παχυμερὲς τὸ δοκιμαζόμενον φάρμακον, δεύτερον δὲ εἰ συνεχὲς αὑτῷ καὶ πυκνὸν ὅλον, ἢ διαλείμματ’ ἔχον καὶ ἀραιόν. καὶ διὰ τοῦτο χρὴ πλείονα καὶ περὶ τούτου ποιήσασθαι λόγον. ἀρχὴ γάρ τις ἔοικεν εἶναι καὶ αὐτὸ καὶ οἷον στοιχεῖον τι παμπόλλης θεωρίας δεόμενον.
