Ὥσπερ δὲ ὑπερβάλλεσθαι βουλόμενος αὐτὸν τοῖς κατὰ τῶν αἰσθήσεων ψεύσμασιν ὁ Ἀσκληπιάδης Μητρόδωρος, ἄλλά τε καὶ ῥητίνην καὶ ἄσφαλτον οὐχ ὁμολογεῖ θερμαίνειν ἡμᾶς, ἅπαντά τε τὰ στύφοντα καὶ ψύχειν φησὶν, εἰ καὶ μηδενὸς ἄλλου χαλκίτεώς τε καὶ χαλκάνθης καὶ μίσυος ἱκανῶς μὲν στυφόντων, εἰς τοσοῦτον δ’ ἡκόντων δ’ ἡκόντων θερμότητος, ὥστε καίειν ἡμᾶς. οὔκουν ἔτι θαυμαστὸν οὐδὲν εἰ ληροῦσί τε πολλὰ καὶ παραλογίζονται σφᾶς αὐτοὺς οἱ ἄνθρωποι, μηδὲ περὶ τῶν ἐναργῶς φαινομένων ὁμολογῆσαι τἀληθὲς τολμῶντες.
