Δημοσθένης ἐν τῷ κατὰ Τιμοκράτους. μήποτε δὲ βέλτιον φέρεται ἐν τοῖς Ἀττικιανοῖς ΝΑΥΚΡΑΤΙΤΙΚΑ, ἵν’ ᾖ ἀπὸ Ναυκρατιτικοῦ πλοίου ἢ Ναυκρατιτῶν ἐμπλεόντων· ἡ γὰρ Ναύκρατις τὸ παλαιὸν ἐμπόριον ἦν τῆς Αἰγύπτου. ἐὰν δὲ ᾖ ναυκραρικὰ, εἴη ἂν τὰ τῶν ἀρχόντων· ναυκράρους γὰρ τὸ παλαιὸν τοὺς ἄρχοντας ἔλεγον, ὡς καὶ ἐν τῇ ε Ἡρόδοτος δηλοῖ. Ἀριστοτέλης δ’ ἐν Ἀθηναίων πολιτείᾳ φησὶ κατέστησαν δὲ δημάρχους τὴν αὐτὴν ἔχοντας ἐπιμέλειαν τοῖς πρότερον ναυκράροις.
