Αἰσχίνης περὶ τῆς ἀποδόσεως. πιθανώτερόν ἐστι λέγειν ὅτι Δωριεῖς, μάλιστα δ’ Ἀργεῖοι, τὸν ὄφιν ἀργᾶν ἐκάλουν, ὡς Ἀχαιὸς ἐν Ἀδράστῳ. Τιμαχίδας δὲ ὁ Ῥόδιος οὐ κατὰ γλῶτταν καλεῖσθαι τὸν ὄφιν ἀργᾶν φησὶν, ἀλλὰ γένος τι εἶναι ὄφεως τοὺς ἀργᾶς· λέγεσθαι οὖν εἰκὸς τὸν Δημοσθένην, ἐπιτροπῆς τοῖς ἐπιτρόποις δίκας λαγχάνοντα, ὄφιν διὰ τὸ θηριῶδες. καὶ αὐτὸς τοὺς τοιούτους ὄφεσιν εἰκάζει ἐν τῷ κατ’ Ἀριστογείτονος. ἐν μέντοι τοῖς Ἀττικιανοῖς ἐγέγραπτο ἅρπαξ. ἔνιοι δὲ τοῦ δράκοντος εἶναί φασι τὸ ἀργᾶν ἐπίθετον.
