Ἰστέον, ὅτι παντὸς ὀρθογωνίου τριγώνου οἱ πολλαπλασιασμοὶ τῶν β πλευρῶν τῆς ὀρθῆς γωνίας ἴσοι εἰσὶ μετὰ τοῦ πολλαπλασιασμοῦ τῆς λοιπῆς τῆς ὑποτεινούσης. οἷον ὡς ἐν ὑποδείγματι ἔστωσαν τριγώνου ὀρθογωνίου αἱ β πλευραὶ τῆς ὀρθῆς γωνίας ἡ μὲν σχοινίων η, ἡ ἐπὶ τῆς βάσεως δηλαδή, ἡ δὲ σχοινίων ϛ ἤγουν ἡ πρὸς ὀρθάς· ἀπὸ τούτων εὑρεῖν τὸν ἀριθμὸν τῆς ὑποτεινούσης. ποίησον οὕτω· πολλαπλασίασον τὰ τῆς βάσεως ἐφʼ ἑαυτά· γίνονται ξδ· καὶ τὰ ϛ τῆς πρὸς ὀρθὰς ἐφʼ ἑαυτά· γίνονται λϛ. σύνθες ταῦτα μετὰ τῶν ξδ τῆς βάσεως· γίνονται ρ. τούτων λαβὲ τετραγωνικὴν πλευράν· καὶ ἔστι ῑ, καὶ αὕτη ἐστὶν ἡ τετραγωνικὴ πλευρὰ ἡ καὶ ὑποτείνουσα.
