τοιαῦτα τοίνυν δηλωσάντων καὶ ἐπιστειλάντων τῶν ὑπὸ ταῖς ἀνατολαῖς ἡγεμόνων, πρὸς τὴν αἰφνίδιον καὶ παῤ ἐλπίδα κομισθεῖσαν ἀγγελίαν οὐ μετρίως ὁ Ἀλέξανδρος ἐταράχθη, καὶ μάλιστα εἰρήνῃ ἐκ παίδων ἐντραφεὶς καὶ τῇ κατὰ τὴν πόλιν ἀεὶ σχολάσας τρυφῇ. τὰ μὲν οὖν πρῶτα ἔδοξεν αὐτῷ κοινωσαμένῳ τοῖς φίλοις πρεσβείαν πέμψαι καὶ διὰ γραμμάτων κωλῦσαι τὴν ὁρμὴν καὶ ἐλπίδα τοῦ βαρβάρου.
