Ὅτι ἐγὼ εἰς μάστιγας ἔτοιμος. Τούτου γὰρ ἕνεκα μετὰ σαρκὸς ἐλθεῖν εἰς τὸν κόσμον ὑπέμεινεν ὡς αὐτὸς ἔλεγεν προσευχόμενος· τί εἴπω; Πάτερ σῶσόν με ἐκ τῆς ὥρας ταύτης, ἀλλὰ διὰ τοῦτο ἦλθον εἰς τὴν ὥραν ταύτην. Καὶ ἡ ἀλγηδών μου ἐνώπιόν μού ἐστιν διαπαντός. Ἡ πρὸς ἡμᾶς δηλονότι συμπάθεια ἧς ἕνεκα τοῦ οἰκείου πάθους ἔχει διαπαντὸς τὴν ἀνάμνησιν· ἀφ’ ὧν γὰρ πέπονθεν, φησὶν ὁ Παῦλος αὐτὸς πειρασθείς, δύναται τοῖς πειραζομένοις βοηθῆσαι.
