Τοιοῦτον γὰρ ἡ ἁμαρτία· καθάπερ τὰ ἄχυρα τῶν ἀλόγων ζῴων ἐστὶ τροφὴ καὶ πυρὸς δαπάνη, οὕτως καὶ ἡ ἁμαρτία τοῦ μέλλοντος πυρός ἐστιν δαπάνη. Βούλῃ μαθεῖν πῶς ἐστιν πυρὸς δαπάνη ἡ ἁμαρτία; Εἴ τις ἐποικοδομεῖ—φησίν—ἐπὶ τὸν θεμέλιον τοῦτον, χρυσίον, ἀργύριον, λίθους τιμίους, ξύλα, χόρτον, καλάμην, ἑκάστου τὸ ἔργον φανερὸν γενήσεται· ἡ γὰρ ἡμέρα δηλώσει, ὅτι ἐν πυρὶ ἀποκαλύπτεται. Εἴ τινος τὸ ἔργον κατακαήσεται, ζημιωθήσεται. Ἰδοὺ πυρὸς δαπάνη ἡ ἁμαρτία.
