Καὶ μὲν δὴ καὶ ἀμφοτέρωθεν σκόπει τὸ λεγόμενον. Ἐξετάζωμεν, τί μὲν τέχνη, τί δὲ ἀρετή. Τέχνην τοίνυν ἄλλό τι ἡγεῖ, ἢ λόγον ἐπὶ τέλος ἰόντα; τὸν μὲν διὰ χειρουργίας σώματι ἀπεργαζόμενον, ὃ καλοῦμεν ποίημα, ἢ οἷον οἰκίαν οἰκοδόμου, καὶ ναυπηγοῦ ναῦν, καὶ γραφέως εἰκόνα·
