ἅγιος δὲ καὶ ἐπαινετὸς ὁ εὔελπις, ὡς τοὐναντίον ἄναγνος καὶ ψεκτὸς ὁ δύσελπις, φόβῳ πρὸς ἅπαντα συμβούλῳ κακῷ χρώμενος· οὐδὲν γὰρ οὕτως ἐχθρὸν ἄλλο ἄλλῳ φασίν, ὡς ἐλπίδα φόβῳ καὶ φόβον ἐλπίδι· καὶ μήποτ’ εἰκότως· προσδοκία μὲν γὰρ ἑκάτερον, ἀλλ’ ἡ μὲν ἀγαθῶν, ἡ δ’ ἔμπαλιν κακῶν, ἀκατάλλακτοι δ’ αἱ φύσεις
