ὁ δ’ ἀστεῖος ἔμπαλιν ἀπράγμονος ζηλωτὴς βίου γεγονὼς ὑποχωρεῖ καὶ μόνωσιν ἀγαπᾷ, λανθάνειν τοὺς πολλοὺς ἀξιῶν, οὐ διὰ μισανθρωπίαν — φιλάνθρωπος γάρ, εἰ καί τις ἄλλος —, ἀλλὰ διὰ τὸ προβεβλῆσθαι κακίαν, ἣν ὁ πολὺς ὄχλος ἀσπάζεται, χαίρων μὲν ἐφ’ οἷς στένειν ἄξιον, λυπούμενος δὲ ἐφ’ οἷς γεγηθέναι καλόν.
