ἡ μὲν γὰρ μεγάλη θάλαττα μετέωρος ὡς οὐδέπω πρότερον ἀρθεῖσα διὰ τῶν στομάτων ἀθρόᾳ ῥύμῃ τοῖς καθ’ ἡμᾶς εἰσερρύη πελάγεσι, τὰ δὲ πλημμύραντα νήσους καὶ ἠπείρους ἐπέκλυσε, πηγῶν δ’ ἀενάων καὶ ποταμῶν αὐθιγενῶν τε καὶ χειμάρρων ἐπάλληλοι φοραὶ συνῆπτον ἀλλήλαις ἀναχεόμεναι καὶ πρὸς ὕψος ἐπαιρόμεναι ἐπέβαινον.
