Μανδρογένους δὲ τοῦ Μάγνητος αὐτὸς ἤκουσα τὴν καρτερίαν, ᾗ ἐκέχρητο ἐφʼ ἡλικίας ἐς τὸ παγκράτιον, τῷ γυμναστῇ ἀνατιθέντος· τεθνάναι μὲν γὰρ τὸν πατέρα ἔλεγεν, ἐπὶ μητρὶ δὲ εἶναι τὸν οἶκον ἐρρωμένῃ τε καὶ γυναικὸς πρόσω, πρὸς ἣν γράψαι τὸν γυμναστὴν ἐπιστολὴν τοιαύτην. τὸν υἱὸν εἰ μὲν τεθνεῶτα ἀκούσει, πίστευσον, εἰ δὲ ἡττώμενον, ἀπίστει. ταύτην δὲ ἔφασκεν ἀγάμενος τὴν ἐπιστολὴν εὐψυχίαν ἐνδείξασθαι πᾶσαν, ὡς μήτε ὁ γυμναστὴς ψεύσαιτο, μήτε ἡ μήτηρ ψευσθείη.
