δολίχου δὲ αἰτία ἦν ἥδε· δρομοκήρυκες ἐξ Ἀρκαδίας ἐφοίτων ἐς τὴν Ἑλλάδα τῶν πολεμικῶν ἄγγελοι, καὶ ἀπείρητο αὐτοῖς μὴ ἱππεύειν, ἀλλʼ αὐτουργοῖς εἶναι τοῦ δρόμου. τὸ ἀεὶ οὖν ἐν βραχεῖ τῆς ἡμέρας διαδραμεῖν στάδια ὁπόσα ὁ δόλιχος, δολιχοδρόμους τοὺς δρομοκήρυκας εἰργάζετο καὶ ἐγύμναζε τῷ πολέμῳ.
