ἄριστος δὲ ὁ κατὰ Βοιωτίαν καὶ Πλάταιαν ὁπλίτης ἐνομίζετο διά τε τὸ μῆκος τοῦ δρόμου διά τε τὴν ὅπλισιν ποδήρη οὖσαν καὶ σκεπάζουσαν τὸν ἀθλητήν, ὡς ἂν εἰ καὶ μάχοιτο, διά τε τὸ ἐπʼ ἔργῳ λαμπρῷ κεῖσθαι τῷ Μηδικῷ, διά τε τὸ νομίσαι ταῦτα Ἕλληνας κατὰ βαρβάρων, καὶ μὴν καὶ διὰ τὸν νόμον τὸν ἐπὶ τοῖς ἀγωνιουμένοις κείμενον, ὡς νενόμικεν ἡ Πλάταια· τὸν γὰρ ἤδη παρʼ αὐτοῖς ἐστεφανωμένον, εἰ ἀγωνίζοιτο αὖθις, ἐγγυητὰς ἔδει καταστῆσαι τοῦ σώματος, θάνατος γὰρ ἡττωμένῳ προσετέτακτο.
