ξέστης Ῥωμαϊκόν ἐστι τὸ ὄνομα· τὸν γὰρ παρ’ ἡμῖν ἓξ ἀριθμὸν αὐτοὶ λέγουσι σέξ, καὶ μέτρου τινὸς παρ’ αὐτοῖς τὸ ἕκτον λέγεται σέξτον· διὰ δὲ εὐφωνίαν τὸ σέξτης λέγεται ξέστης μεταθέσει τοῦ ξ̄. οὕτω Φιλόξενος ἐν τῷ περὶ Ῥωμαίων διαλέκτου.
