οὐδὲ Λούκουλλος Τιγράνην ἀναιμωτὶ καθεῖλεν, οὐδὲ Σκηπίων Ἀντίοχον, χιλίας δὲ ναῦς οἱ παλαιοὶ περὶ Σικελίαν ἀπώλεσαν, ἐν δʼ Ἰταλίᾳ πολλοὺς αὐτοκράτορας καί στρατηγούς, ὧν οὐδεὶς προηττηθεὶς ἐκώλυσεν αὐτοὺς κρατῆσαι τῶν νενικηκότων. οὐ γὰρ εὐτυχίᾳ τὰ Ῥωμαίων, ἀλλὰ τλημοσύνῃ καί ἀρετῇ πρὸς τὰ δεινὰ χωρούντων εἰς τοῦτο προῆλθε δυνάμεως.
