σῆπά γε μήν: λείπει τὸ ὁμοίαν, ἵν’ ᾖ πεδανοῖσι δομὴν σαύροισιν ὁμοίαν, τουτέστι τὴν σῆπα τὴν τοῖς πεδανοῖς σαύροις κατὰ τὴν δομὴν ὁμοίαν, ἤγουν τὸ σῶμα, ἀλύξεις. ἡ δὲ σὴψ ὁμοία ἐστὶ τῇ σαύρᾳ. καλεῖται δὲ καὶ χαλκίς. ἔχει γὰρ ἐπὶ τοῦ νώτου χαλκιζούσας ῥάβδους· ἐστὶ δὲ τεσσάρων παλαιστῶν. σὴψ δὲ καλεῖται παρὰ τὸ σήπειν τοὺς πληγέντας. γίνεται δὲ ἐν Συρίᾳ καὶ Λιβύῃ καὶ Κύπρῳ καὶ διατρίβει ἐν πέτραις.
