Κάλχης· εἶδος πορφύρας, ἀφ’ ἧς αἱ γυναῖκες κάλχιον βάπτουσιν· καλχαίνειν γὰρ τὸ πορφύρειν. Τὸν δὲ στρόμβον, ὃν ἔλεγον οἱ ἀρχαῖοι ὄστρακον, τῶν κογχυλίων, οἷς καὶ ἐχρῶντο ἀντὶ σάλπιγγος· καὶ Ἀπολλόδωρος ἐν τοῖς Ὁμήρου οὕτως εἶπεν (Il. ξ 413) Στρόμβον δ’ ὣς ἔσσευεν.
