Τοῦ θαλασσίου λαγωοῦ, ὅς ἐστιν εἶδος ἰχθύος, καὶ Ἱππῶναξ μνημονεύει· τὴν μὲν ἀσθένειαν ἀφρῷ παραπλήσιος, τὴν δ’ ἐπιφάνειαν μέλας, θανάσιμος δὲ βροθεὶς, οὗ ἡ μὲν ὀσμὴ ταῖς τῶν ἰχθύων λεπίσι καὶ τῷ ἀποπλύματι αὐτῶν ἔοικεν, ἡ δὲ γεῦσις ἰχθύων σεσηπότων γεύσει ὁμοία ἐστίν. Κακοφθορέος δὲ κακῶς φθείροντος.
