ἕκαστον γὰρ αὐτῶν πέφυκεν ὁτέ μὲν ἐκτείνεσθαι ὁτέ δὲ συστέλλεσθαι, οἷον τὸ μὲν α ἐπὶ τοῦ (Hom. Ε 31) Ἆρες Ἄρες βροτολοιγέ μιαιφόνε τειχεσιπλῆτα, τὸ δὲ ι (Hom. H 20) Ἴλιον εἰς ἱερήν· τῇ δʼ ἀντίος ὤρνυτʼ Ἀπολλῶν, τὸ δὲ υ (fr. enon. 391 Schneider, Callim. reiecit Pfeiffer) θεσπέσιον νεφέων ἐκ Διὸς ὗεν ὕδωρ.
