οὐ μὴν ἀλλὰ κἂν δῶμεν αὐ- τοῖς τὰς ἀφαιρέσεις ποιεῖσθαι ἐπὶ τῶν αἰσθητῶν τούτων γραμμῶν, οὐ δυνήσονται οὐδʼ οὕτως εὐοδῆσαι. γὰρ ἀφʼ ὅλης τῆς γραμμῆς ἡ ἀφαίρεσις γενήσεται ἀπὸ μέρους, καὶ τὸ ἀφαιρούμενον ἴσον ἀπὸ ἴσου ἢ ἄνισον ἀπὸ ἀνίσου [ἢ ἐναλλὰξ] γενήσεται· οὐδὲν δὲ τούτων ἐστὶν εὔπορον, ὡς ἐν τῷ Πρὸς τοὺς γραμματικοὺς (M I 162) καὶ ἐν τῷ Πρὸς τοὺς φυσικοὺς (M IX 279 et 294) ὑπομνήματι παρ- εστήσαμεν· οὐκ ἄρα δυνατόν ἐστι τοῖς γεωμέτραις ἀφαι- ρεῖν τι καὶ τέμνειν ἀπὸ γραμμῆς.
