τυφλώττουσιν οὖν οἱ γραμ- ματικοὶ καὶ τὸ ἀκόλουθον αὑτοῖς οὐ συνορῶσι, λέγοντες ἑπτὰ φωνάεντα τυγχάνειν, πέντε μόνων ὄντων πρὸς τὴν φύσιν. Καὶ ἀναστρόφως ἔσεσθαί τινά φασιν ἔνιοι τῶν φιλο- σόφων πλείονα στοιχεῖα, διάφορον ἔχοντα δύναμιν τῶν συνήθως παραδιδομένων, οἶον καὶ τὸ αι καὶ τὸ ου καὶ πᾶν ὃ τῆς ὁμοίας ἐστὶ φύσεως. τὸ γὰρ στοιχεῖν κριτέον μάλιστα, ὅτι στοιχεῖόν ἐστιν, ἐκ τοῦ ἀσύνθετον καὶ μονό- ποιον ἔχειν φθόγγον, οἷός ἐστιν ὁ τοῦ α καὶ ε καὶ ο καὶ τῶν λοιπῶν.
