καὶ εἰ μὲν τὰ πάθη φαμὲν εἶναι φαινόμενα, πάντα τὰ φαινόμενα λεκτέον ἀληθῆ καὶ καταληπτὰ· εἰ δὲ τὰ ποιητικὰ τῶν παθῶν προσαγορεύομεν φαινόμενα, πάντα ἐστὶ τὰ φαινόμενα ψευδῆ καὶ πάντα ἀκατάληπτα. τὸ γὰρ περὶ ἡμᾶς συμβαῖνον πάθος ἑαυτοῦ πλέον οὐδὲν ἡμῖν ἐνδείκνυται. ἔνθεν καὶ (εἰ χρὴ τἀληθὲς λέγειν) μόνον τὸ πάθος ἡμῖν ἐστι φαινόμενον· τὸ δ’ ἐκτὸς καὶ τοῦ πάθους ποιητικὸν τάχα μέν ἐστιν ὄν, οὐ φαινόμενον δὲ ἡμῖν.
