Οἱ δέ περὶ τὸν Κριτόλαον καὶ οἱ ἀπὸ τῆς Ἀκαδημίας, ἐν οἷς ἐστι Κλειτόμαχος καὶ Χαρμίδας, εἰώθασι καὶ οὗ- τοι τοιαῦτά τινα λέγειν, ὅτι τὰς μέν τέχνας οὐκ ἐκβάλ- λουσιν αἱ πόλεις, πάνυ τι βιωφελεῖς οὔσας ἐπιστάμεναι, ὡς οὐδὲ τοὺς μέν οἰκονομικοὺς τῶν οἴκων ἐκβάλλομεν τούς δέ βουκόλους ἐκ τῆς ἀγέλης, τὴν μέντοι ῥητορικὴν πάντες πανταχόθεν ὡς πολεμιωτάτην ἐδίωξαν, ὥσπερ ὁ μὲν Κρητικὸς νομοθέτης εἴρξας ἐπιβαίνειν τῆς νήσου τοὺς ἐν λόγοις ἀλαζονευσαμένους,
