ἀλλ’ ἀποδείξαντες, φασί, πρότερον τὴν τῶν λεκτῶν ὕπαρξιν ἕξομεν βεβαίαν καὶ τὴν τοῦ σημείου φύσιν. οὐκοῦν ὅταν ἀποδείξητε, ἐρεῖ τις, τότε καὶ τὸ πιστὴν εἶναι τὴν τοῦ σημείου ὕπαρξιν λαμβάνετε· ἄχρι δὲ ἐπὶ ψιλῆς μένετε τῆς ὑποσχέσεως, ἀνάγκη καὶ ἡμᾶς ἐν ἐποχῇ μένειν. εἶτα καὶ πῶς οἷόν τέ ἐστιν ἀποδεικνύναι τὴν τῶν λεκτῶν ὕπαρξιν; ἢ γὰρ διὰ σημείου δεήσει τοῦτο ποιεῖν ἢ δι’ ἀποδείξεως. ἀλλ’ οὔτε διὰ σημείου τινὸς οὔτε δι’ ἀποδείξεως δυνατὸν τοῦτο ποιεῖν· ταῦτα γὰρ καὶ αὐτὰ λεκτὰ ὄντα παραπλησίως τοῖς ἄλλοις λεκτοῖς ἐζήτηται,
