μάταιοι τοίνυν εἰσὶ καὶ οἱ τὸν ἄνθρωπον ζῷον λέγοντες λογικὸν θνητὸν καὶ τὰ ἑξῆς· οὐ γὰρ τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἀπέδοσαν, ἀλλὰ τὰ συμβεβηκότα τούτῳ κατηρίθμησαν. ὧν τὸ μὲν ζῷον τῶν διὰ παντὸς αὐτῷ συμβεβηκότων ἐστίν· ἀδύνατον γὰρ μὴ ζῶον ὄντα ἄνθρωπον εἶναι· τὸ δὲ “θνητὸν” οὐδὲ συμβεβηκός ἐστιν, ἀλλ’ ἐπιγινόμενόν τι τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ· ὅτε γὰρ ἐσμὲν ἄνθρωποι, ζῶμεν καὶ οὐ τεθνήκαμεν.
