Ἀλλʼ εἰώθασι πρὸς τὰς τοιαύτας ἐπιχειρήσεις ὑπαν- τῶντες οἱ περὶ τὸν Ἐρατοσθένη λέγειν ὅτι τὸ σημεῖον οὔτε ἐπιλαμβάνει τινὰ τόπον οὔτε καταμετρεῖ τὸ διάστημα τῆς γραμμῆς, ῥυὲν δέ ποιεῖ τὴν γραμμήν. ὅπερ ἐστὶν ἀδιανόητον. ῥεῖν γὰρ νοεῖται τὸ ἀπό τινος τόπου εἴς τινα τόπον ἐπεκτείνεσθαι, ὥσπερ τὸ ὕδωρ. εἰ δὴ τοιοῦτόν τι φαντασιούμεθα τὸ σημεῖον, ἀκολουθήσει οὐχ οἷον ἀμερές αὐτὸ τυγχάνειν, ἀλλʼ ἐκ τῶν ἐναντίων πολυμερές.
