λήμματα δὲ καλοῦμεν οὐ θέματά τινα, ἃ συναρπάζομεν, ἀλλ’ ἅπερ ὁ προσδιαλεγόμενος τῷ ἐμφανῆ εἶναι δίδωσι καὶ παραχωρεῖ. ἐπιφορὰ δὲ ἐτύγχανε τὸ ἐκ τούτων τῶν λημ- μάτων κατασκευαζόμενον. οἷον λόγος μέν ἐστι τὸ ὅλον τοῦτο σύστημα “ εἰ ἡμέρα ἔστι, φῶς ἔστιν· ἀλλὰ μὴν ἡμέρα ἔστιν· φῶς ἄρα ἔστιν”, λήμματα δὲ αὐτοῦ καθέστηκε τό τε “ εἰ ἡμέρα ἔστι, φῶς ἔστιν” καὶ τὸ “ἀλλὰ μὴν ἔστιν, ἐπιφορὰ δὲ τὸ φῶς ἄρα ἔστιν .
