Ἀρχέτω δὲ ἡμῖν εὐθὺς ἡ πρὸς τοὺς γραμματικοὺς ζήτησις, πρῶτον μὲν ἐπείπερ ἀπὸ νηπιότητος σχεδὸν καὶ ἐκ πρώτων σπαργάνων γραμματικῇ παραδιδόμεθα, ἔστι δὲ αὕτη οἷον ἀφετήριόν τι πρὸς τὴν τῶν ἄλλων μάθησιν, εἶθʼ ὅτι παρὰ πάσας θρασύνεται τὰς ἐπιστήμας, σχεδόν τι τὴν τῶν Σειρήνων ὑπόσχεσιν ὑπισχνουμένη.
