Ὅθεν ἀπʼ ἄλλης ἀρχῆς ὑποδεικτέον ὅτι κἂν τούτων ἀποστῶμεν, διὰ τὴν ἐγχειρηθησομένην ἐπὶ τῆς ῥυθμο- ποιίας ἀπορίαν ἀνυπόστατος καθέστηκεν ἡ μουσική. εἰ |γὰρ μηδέν ἐστι ῥυθμός, οὐδὲ ἐπιστήμη τις ἔσται περὶ ῥυθμοῦ ἀλλὰ μὴν οὐδέν ἐστι ῥυθμός, ὡς παραστήσομεν· οὐκ ἄρα ἔστι τις ἐπιστήμη περὶ ῥυθμοῦ.
