Περὶ δὲ τῆς ἀφασίας λέγομεν τάδε. φάσις καλεῖται διῶς, κοινῶς καὶ ἰδίως, κοινῶς μὲν ἡ δηλοῦσα θέσιν ἢ ἄρσιν φωνή, οἷον ‘ἡμέρα ἔστιν, οὐχ ἡμέρα ἔστιν,’ ἰδίως δὲ ἡ δηλοῦσα θέσιν μόνον, καθ’ ὃ σημαινόμενον τὰ ἀποφατικὰ οὐ καλοῦσι φάσεις. ἡ οὖν ἀφασία ἀπόστασίς ἐστι τῆς κοινῶς λεγομένης φάσεως, ἡ ὑποτάσσεσθαι λέγομεν τήν τε κατάφασιν καὶ τὴν ἀπόφασιν, ὡς εἶναι ἀφασίαν πάθος ἡμέτερον δι’ ὃ οὔτε τιθέναι τι οὔτε ἀναιρεῖν φαμεν.
